1. Robert De Niro - Sonny Corleone (The Godfather)
The 1970s film industry witnessed the rise of more Italian-American talent than any other decade. De Palma, Coppola, Scorsese, Pacino, Cimino, Cazale, Stallone... all these exotic names became household names during this period. All of them had to rise from zero, of course. Even Robert De Niro. In the early 70s, Robert De Niro was a young ambitious actor and protégé to legendary acting coach Stella Adler. His intense character and impeccable talent guided him to the final rounds of the casting for a little film called The Godfather. He was to play Santino "Sonny" Corleone, the eldest son of a mafia kingpin by the name of Vito. De Niro would eventually lose the part to James Caan, but his screen-test impressed director Francis Ford Coppola so much that he cast him in The Godfather II to play young Vito in a role that would land De Niro his first Oscar.
