4. Psycho (1998)
Arguably the most misguided attempt at remaking a classic ever, Gus Van Sants updating of Alfred Hitchcocks 1960 classic masterpiece is basically a shot-for-shot remake in that many scenes basically mimic what the Master of Suspense did almost four decades earlier. But as the late-great Roger Ebert described it in his review, a shot-by-shot remake is pointless; genius apparently resides between or beneath the shots, or in chemistry that cannot be timed or counted.
The tagline:Check in. Relax. Take a shower. This fantastic tagline takes the most iconic element of the original Psycho the fateful shower in which Marion Crane makes her sharp demise and prays on our nostalgia and love for that moment we first saw the shower scene. Brilliant.
