5 Best Extended Takes In Movie History

2. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (2007)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ur9tskHaPo In possibly the most underrated movie of the 21st century, Romanian director Cristian Mungiu details a day in the life of two college-aged girls, Otilia and Gabita. Otilia, played to perfection by Anamaria Marinca, has to help her friend obtain an abortion, an illegal procedure during the 1980's in which the film takes place. After procuring the abortion, Otilia looks after her friend who continually proves to be more and more irresponsible. When she leaves briefly to visit her boyfriend for a family birthday party, Otilia attempts to act present, though her mind is clearly in other places. In a nearly motionless shot lasting over seven minutes, the camera lingers on Otilia at the end of the dinner table as she listens to her boyfriend's bourgeoisie family talk about inane matters. Without speaking and barely emoting, Marinca and Mungiu's camera manage to encapsulate a true sense of dread and suspense. But it's still funnier than Dinner for Schmucks.
