5 Directors Who Should Never Have Returned To The Franchises They Created

2. Francis Ford Coppola - The Godfather: Part III

Coppola, again, is a great director, even his worst films are at least somewhat watch-able (I'm looking at you, Jack) so, again, it was with excitement that we heard he was writing another film in the Godfather series with author Mario Puzo. The finished film itself, whilst nowhere near as bad it could've been, was just so dull, it barely resembled a Godfather film. The music was there, the atmosphere, even most of the original cast were around reprising their roles - but the story itself - Michael trying to atone for his sins, to find a way out of his lifestyle and legitimise his business - just wasn't interesting. That said, anything following The Godfather: Part II wasn't going to be as good. But he really stuck the nail in the coffin by casting his daughter, Sofia Coppola, whose role as a piece of cardboard did nothing to help the film in any way whatsoever. She has thankfully has gone to be a great director herself, with films like Lost in Translation, Somewhere and the upcoming The Bling Ring. So that's ONE good thing The Godfather: Part III did, I suppose.
