5 Fantasy Movie Adaptation No One Liked
3. Eragon
The 2006 film Eragon could have been a good movie, but it suffered from one of the commonest things to plague fantasy adaptations: a lack of faith in what was being done.
The film was different to many others in that it was an adaptation of a current novel, Christopher Paolini was still writing his Inheritance Cycle series when the film was made.
The books were often compared to The Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars, with some people even accusing Paolini of plagiarism, but the film was different to them in that it wasn't as successful. Its main problem was that it was derivative, bringing very little originality to what it did.
It didn't take the time to build a world as real and tangible as Lord of the Rings; neither did it take the time to create characters who felt real and make you care about them. Even Jeremy Irons wasn't enough to make his character stand out from all of the other cynical old guy characters of cinema.
As a standalone film it couldn't hold up, but it also didn't have a promise of a sequel to keep fans interested. The studio put a lot of expectations on it from the size of its budget but didn't really give it a fair chance to live up to them.
