5 Fantasy Movie Adaptation No One Liked
2. The Golden Compass
In 2007 New Line Cinema brought out its next big adaptation of a classic fantasy adventure, The Golden Compass, based on Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.
Starring Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, and the voice of Ian McKellen, based on a famous novel and from the studio that gave us The Lord Of The Rings, how could it possibly fail? Spectacularly, it seems.
The film's main problem is that it doesn't have faith in its source material. The books were all about religion as a powerful institution, the film hardly mentioned it at all. Books are bestsellers for a reason and any major change from them usually annoys fans and doesn't tempt film goers who are unfamiliar with them.
The film wasn't terrible, and in reality it probably had box office expectations placed on it that it could never have lived up to, but a little more forethought could have helped to give it a more cohesive plot and a broader audience appeal.
There was also the problem that the film didn't have a real ending. It was obviously done to set up the sequels but in reality it left the film feeling unfinished, it failed financially and the sequels never appeared.
