So from what I can gather, the growing critique of this film in recent years stems from the undoubted excellence of the Nolan trilogy and the widening gap in technology. Is it really the fault of the movie that technology has advanced in the 24 years since it was released? I admit that time hasn't been kind and visuals that may have once filled viewers with awe don't quite have the same effect, but does that shouldn't mean that we just right the film off completely. We don't dismiss The Wizard of Oz or Jason and the Argonauts for not looking as good, so why hold Batman to a higher standard? Yes the Bat plane doesn't seem quite as badass as it once did and Michael Keaton's Batman moves like he is stuck in a medieval suit of armour, but it's all part of the charm.

With the visuals out of the way, we move on to the criticism of the movies story and tone. For a long time Batman '89 was considered to be everything that the fans wanted €“unlike the 60's show it was considered to be dark and gritty, exactly how people felt it should be. Clearly this isn't quite the case anymore €“ though certainly darker in tone than the Adam West led series, in its own way this movie is very goofy and there is nothing wrong with that. The Nolan trilogy has come along and The Dark Knight specifically has changed our perceptions of what a superhero movie could be, but surely there is room for more than one approach?

Yes it has its faults, such as Vicki Vale having to look up the death of the Wayne€™s when surely it would be common knowledge, or the fact that the bat suit prevented Michael Keaton from moving his head, and not forgetting the infamous incident when Alfred lets Vicki into the bat cave. These faults though noticeable do not ruin the film, Jack Nicholson's scene-stealing performance, the wonderful score and the Gothic look of Gotham make Batman a movie that should be held up proudly as a representation of the Dark Knight, not discarded as a relic of the past.
