5 Great Movies That People Randomly Started Hating

3. The Lion King

The Lion King

The Lion King is in my opinion one of the greatest animated movies of all time.It was a phenomenal success at the time of its 1994 release and was one of a string of hits for Disney at the peak of an era that has been dubbed the Disney Renaissance. It was called this because the era which also included movies such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, saw a return to form for Disney after the dark years of the 70's and especially the 80's during which the studio produced very few successful films. Following on from the previously mentioned movies and 1992's Aladdin, was The Lion King which is still the highest grossing traditionally animated movie of all time. So why then €“ despite its amazing accomplishments- does The Lion King not get the praise it deserves?

There are people that love the film and give it the praise that I believe its quality justifies, but there is also a rather sizeable group of people that believe The Lion King shouldn't have the praise that it received because not only is it overrated, it's a rip-off of Hamlet and Kimba The White Lion. Now that we are over a decade removed from the renaissance these people make the argument that The Lion King is not only inferior to the best animated movies of its own time, but also those of Disney's golden age like Pinocchio and Bambi. I understand people€™s affinity for those films and I accept the fact that everyone has the right to their opinion, but there is no way in hell that The Lion King is overrated.

This movie grabs you from the very moment that it starts, when the circle of life kicks in and we are treated to the awe inspiring image sight of Disney's Africa. It is a non-stop ride from here, the story and the characters are matched perfectly by the music provided by Sir Elton John in tandem with Tim Rice. The tragedy of Mufasa's death, the joy of Timon and Pumba and the triumph of Simba's return to Pride Rock make for a memorable and multi-faceted watch. The Lion King may not be the greatest animated movie of all time, but it certainly isn't far off.
