5 Greatest Flamethrower Moments In Film

5. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (George Miller, 1981)

These days you're more likely to see Mel Gibson with a bottle of scotch in his hand than a weapon of mass destruction, but back in 1981 he was still a relatively unknown actor with an Australian accent and a penchant for blowing stuff up. Never was he better - in this writer's opinion - than during those early Mad Max years before he went legit with crowd pleaser's such as Lethal Weapon and that film about Jesus. Mad Max 2 makes the list because the movie pretty much centres on the idea of gas as a precious commodity, and seeing the titular character use it as a weapon against the ridiculous-but-terrifying Lord Humongous is the ultimate F-you in our eyes. But the moment we love the most is when Max symbolically hands over the reigns of power to the Warrior Woman at the oil refinery by placing the flamethrower in her hands. You see, in a world where gas is cash, it is those that control it that have all the power, and no amount of walking around in your pants with a goofy mask on can change that.
