5 Horror Remakes Done Right

4. Happiness Of The Katakuris (2001)

TheHappinessOfTheKatakuris Based on the 1998 South Korean black comedy, The Quiet Family by Kim Ji-woon, The Happiness of the Katakuris takes the main theme of the film and throws almost every genre there is at it to see what sticks. In this case, everything stuck. Takashi Miike (Ichi The Killer, Audition) appropriated the plot of a family converting a large house into a hikers lodge only to have their first guest commit suicide and the subsequent guests to suffer similar fates. Naturally, he turned it into a musical/horror/drama/comedy. Those of you familiar with Miike's work may be disappointed that this isn't a satirical blood soaked adventure (not all of his films are, but he is known for them) instead you have the humble workings and inner turmoil of a family who are simply trying to get by. With that said, Miike does beguile us with not only musical numbers as stated before but musical numbers with zombies who sing, karaoke segments, claymation and whimsical choreography by Ryohei Kondo who choreographs 'naturally'(from what we gather, makes it up on the spot).

Nelson has been in love with film ever since he saw Lawrence of Arabia as a child. He has an obscenely large DVD collection that is slowly taking over his home and will argue with you that The Third Man is quite possibly the greatest film ever made.
