5 Horror Remakes Done Right

3. The Thing (1982)

thething No remake list is complete without the inclusion of John Carpenter's remake of Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks 1951 classic, The Thing From Another World. Adapted from the 1938 novella, "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr., Carpenter's rendition is highly regarded as not only superior to the original but more accurate to the source material too. Not only are the creatures motivations more sinister than, 'I just want to go home in my spaceship', its means of removing the human threat by symbiosis is far more terrifying. Rob Bottin's creature effects and Stan Winston's now infamous dog transformation are, even to this day, heralded as some of the best practical effects work on film. Despite it's reputation as one of the most acclaimed horror films made, Box Office Mojo has The Thing listed as #42 in terms of highest grossing horror remakes, The Ring being #1.
