5 Interesting A24 Movies Destined For Critical Acclaim In 2020

3. Zola

The pioneering movie based on a 148-tweet thread, Zola opens up new avenues for adaptations. It got a wonderful reception when it premiered at Sundance last month and looks like it could be one of this year's hit movies.

We doubt that Aziah Wells King (whose nickname is Zola) foresaw this success when she decided to offload a wild true story about the crazy events that unfolded after she agreed to go for a stripping money-making trip on a whim with a girl she didn't know. If you were ever thinking of doing this then this extraordinary cautionary tale will scare you off the idea.

Not that it's a horror story or anything. It sounds bleak as hell while also being hilarious. Millions of people were captivated by the viral tweet thread, including director Janicza Bravo, who also co-wrote the screenplay. It will be interesting to see the cinematic techniques she used to bring these tweets to life. Not that the source material lacks vivid imagery or the kind of informal story-telling talent that could draw in a crowd in a pub.

That's not a bad way of describing the movie. Think of the maddest story that you've ever heard first-hand and then multiply by ten. If Bravo can do the story justice with this screen adaptation, it's going to be a lot of fun.
