5 Johnny Depp Movies To Watch Instead Of The Lone Ranger

1. Ed Wood - 1994ed-wood-1 Sadly, most may never will have heard of this one. Ed Wood doesn't enjoy the enduring popularity, "emo-appeal" and "rocker-love" of other Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaborations like Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow, and that is a crying shame. Everything is perfect in this film: the cast, the script and the direction. The fact that the biopic about the infamously untalented director of such films as Glen or Glenda and Plan 9 From Outer Space is the best collaboration(of Burton and Depp) is not without a sense of irony. This sympathetic portrait of Wood's personal and Hollywood struggles is both intriguing and entertaining, and this film was a brave choice for both Depp and Burton; the transvestism of Wood and the film's commitment to black and white were a major departure from their other movies, if not from every other movie from 1994...and it worked! The scope of Ed Wood follows Depp as Wood through his struggle to remain a filmmaker in 1952 all the way to the premiere of Plan 9 in a historical retconning of Wood's life. Despite the inaccurate details etc., there is a clear love of Wood's distinctive silly, cheap brand of filmmaking from Burton and there is a sense that this is a personal and intimate project for him and Depp too, who shows off one of his best performances on film to date. Depp's Ed Wood is bizarre, unique, flamboyant and truly stellar, containing shades of latter Depp characters like Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, The Mad Hatter and so on. It is a must watch for all Johnny Depp fans and will not leave you empty or upset like The Lone Ranger seems to set to do. The Lone Ranger opens in the UK this Friday, 9th August 2013.
