5 Joss Whedon Films That Never Got Made

1. Dr. Horrible 2

First mentioned in 2009, the latest news is that the sequel to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog "will exist", although this could also be said of Buffy The Animated Series, which made it to the 4 minute concept stage, but no further. And even if Dr. Horrible 2 does ultimately get released, there is still no knowing when this might be. Not able to write for film or television during the 2007/08 strike by the Writers Guild of America, Whedon couldn't just sit back and not write anything, and so the original Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was a self-funded project that was released online. With the initial target of just making back enough money to pay the crew who worked for free at the time, it has since made over $3 Million, and won a variety of industry awards. Star of the original Nathan Fillion has also made it known there is already a title, but isn't allowed to reveal it, and in 2011 there were confirmations of a "very specific structure" as well as several songs. This soon became talk of writing the script in the summer of 2012 in order to start film by spring 2013, although obviously this never happened. With the success of The Avengers, Whedon's work load throughout Marvel's Cinematic Universe has increased, and this is to say nothing of his work on Much Ado, although it goes without saying that this was a welcome surprise. There is hardly any doubt that offers from big budget studios will now become more frequent, and just how many of these he accepts is hard to say. The one thing we can say for certain however, is that even just one of these will leave less time for his own passion projects, like Dr. Horrible 2. Regardless of whether it is a case of "if" or "when" Dr. Horrible 2 will get made, it is likely the speculation will always be there; it is not the first Whedon project to languish in development hell, and with his schedule becoming busier and busier, it likely it won't be the last either.
