5 Major Plot Predictions For Star Wars Episodes 8 & 9

5. Rey Is Luke's Daughter (And The Symbol Of His Greatest Failure)

Annie Leibovitz/Vanity Fair

So much online ink has been spent on theorising who Rey really is, and while you can no doubt find evidence she's a Kenobi or a reincarnation of Anakin or Ponda Baba's niece, there's only a handful of logical solutions that don't have her as the kid of nobodies; Han and Leia are either idiots or the most coldhearted parents ever if she's theirs, and anything reaches outside of the Skywalker lineage seems to forget the recurrence of the Star Wars narrative. Ergo, she's Luke's.

But, as was the case with Luke learning of his true parentage in the originals, the reveal is only the start of a bigger story. Jedi can't fall in love. Although this was a narrative element only introduced in Attack Of The Clones, it is still accepted as an essential part of the order, so in fathering Rey with an unknown woman (we'll get to that in a bit) Luke is going against a key element of the Jedi Code, something that will no doubt have been on his mind going forward and training the new generation of Jedi.

We know that when Ben Solo turned to the Dark Side and slaughtered the new generation of Jedi (as seen in Rey's vision) that Luke took it personally, but if he was already suffering doubt over his relationship then it's very likely he'll blame his failure with the future Kylo Ren on himself. Rey is thus not only his daughter, but a symbol of what he perceives his biggest mistake. The sequels, particularly The Last Jedi, will then likely deal with him coming to terms with this, and facing that there were bigger schemes at work than his love life.
