I don't know if these exist in the UK, but in the United States some bigger cities have cameras attached to the traffic lights, ready to capture anyone going a split second past a red light along with a $120 ticket. If you think that sounds harrowing, a sentient, lip-reading machine capable of cutting off your life source is downright bone-chilling. When HAL spies on the astronauts who believe they are out of his purview, we feel dirty and violated by his voyeurism, and not in the awesome way.
