5 Most Profitable Hollywood Remakes Of Asian Horror Films

2. The Grudge

Jessica Alba The Eye
Columbia Pictures

Budget: $10 million

Box Office: $187 million

2004 film The Grudge was a remake of the 2002 Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge. The Grudge’s 39% Tomatometer rating did not stop it from becoming a commercially successful film. Similar to the original film, The Grudge was also based in a Japanese setting and featured Japanese spirits.

However, the remake told a story of an American family being tormented by the vengeful ghosts. Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in the film as a care worker. The Grudge 2 failed to replicate the box office performance of the first film and earned only $50 million more than its $20 million production budget.

The Grudge 3 was released on DVD after being shown in limited theaters. A reboot of the film is set to be released next year.
