5 Most Profitable Hollywood Remakes Of Asian Horror Films
1. The Ring
Budget: $48 million
Box Office: $249 million
Released in 2002, The Ring was a remake of the 1998 Japanese film Ring and is known as the film that kick-started Hollywood’s love for remaking Asian horror films.
With a 71% rating, The Ring is the only film among the top five most profitable Hollywood remakes of Asian horror films to be certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The Ring is the highest grossing horror remake of any origin. Both the original and the remake are based on the idea of a cursed videotape that kills the viewer after seven days and featured the iconic scene of the “lead” spirit climbing out of the television to attack their victims.
Naomi Watts starred in the first films and its 2005 sequel The Ring Two. The box office performance for The Ring Two and the second sequel Rings were nowhere close to the first film, and they earned “only” $111 million and $58 million more than their production budgets respectively.
