5 Movie Box Office Bombs That Were Actually Really Good
2. Treasure Planet
In similar circumstances to John Carter, the only thing that stopped Treasure Planet from being an unrivalled box office success was the miscalculated marketing strategy. Seemingly destined for stardom, Treasure Planet had groundbreaking visual effects for the time and was an innovative re-adaptation of the famous Treasure Island book.
Starring the now household name, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Treasure Planet focuses on Jim Hawkins, a reckless and adventurous young man who goes aboard a spaceship to search for the legendary treasure of Captain Flint.
Released in 2002, Treasure Planet used an entirely new animation software which could have revolutionised the future of animated films. Visually, this film is stunning with incredible imagination inspired characters and breathtaking scenery. On top of this, Treasure Planet benefited from an excellent soundtrack which elevated the emotion of the film and the characters within.
People who grew up watching this version of Treasure Island are more often than not huge fans, completely baffled at the film's lack of commercial success. Now with a huge cult following and the respect it deserves years later, rumours are beginning to circle of a live-action Treasure Planet remake, but Disney is yet to confirm any official production being in the works.
