3. The Narrator - Fight Club
I'm sure by now everyone knows the twist in Fight Club and I'm also sure that everyone has asked themselves the same question about the final five minutes. How did The Narrator survive when Tyler Durden - essentially himself - did not? It's a strange one, but survive he does. The Narrator spends the entirety of the film descending into madness and not realising that his best friend and leader of Fight Club is an imaginary manifestation of himself. Therefore everything Tyler says and does, isn't just something The Narrator can see or hear but it's something everyone else can too. This leaves him baffled when a movement called Project Mayhem begins to take over the world. Despite believing he had nothing to do with it, everyone else thinks he does and it's at this point where the situation begins to get a bit more obvious, very surreal and creepy at the same time. After one of the strangest fight scenes in movie history, where Edward Norton basically fights himself, he ends up held at gunpoint by his own subconscious. Seeing an opportunity to rid himself of the Durden burden, the Narrator puts the gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. Amazingly he pulls through, but can only watch alongside love interest Marla as the world outside begins to crumble.
