5 Movies That Changed Your Mind About Directors You Hated

5. Event Horizon

Specialising in video game adaptations, although he isn't that prolific Paul W.S. Anderson has still gained a reputation for being one of the worst blockbuster filmmakers from the past couple of decades. His movies aren't offensively bad by any means, but he has a habit of taking adored properties like Resident Evil or the Alien vs. Predator sub-series, and adapting them to meet his own unique - but usually pretty misguided - vision.

Even the one movie which people tend to agree is his best (and the best video game film ever made), Mortal Kombat, is only really good in a B-movie sort of way.

Event Horizon, on the other hand, is the one genuinely great entry in the director's filmography. Overlooked when it first hit theatres, the sci-fi horror has since been embraced as a genuine cult classic, acting as an incredibly tight mix of Hellraiser, Alien, and In the Mouth of Madness.

Yeah, it's not exactly the most original movie, but its brand of body horror, as well as some deliciously pulpy performances from Sam Neil and the rest of the cast, proved that Anderson does have a spark that's tried, and ultimately failed, to shine through in each one of his other projects.
