4. The Evil Dead
Possibly the ultimate exception to the rule that remakes are unnecessary. The Evil Dead was Sam Raimis big one before he sold out to Spider-Man although he did return to horror with Drag Me To Hell so we can forgive him. The Evil Dead was one time considered the daddy of all video nasties, featuring eye-gouging, chainsaw hacking, rape by plant and more blood than in the entire Saw series all in a compact 90 minutes. Starring Bruce Campbell, who was transported into the realms of B-movie legend status by the film, as one of a group of twenty-somethings discovering a demonic force in a woodland cabin, the film was banned, then released cut and to this day it is safe to say that a completely uncut version still doesnt exist in print. Although the original will always retain its cult status, this remake, which has the full support of Raimi and is produced by Campbell, allows the film (which was more or less remade as Evil Dead 2 in the 80s) to get a severe special effects upgrade while it has been guaranteed by Campbell that fans will not be let down. Judging by the Red Band trailer, he certainly isnt lying. Something tells me this is about to push the censor boundary more than any Saw film managed.
