5 Other Dennis Lehane Novels That Should Be Movies

3. Prayers For Rain

Dennis Lehane Shutter Island
HarperCollins

This is the fourth book in his private detective series and it’s the closest story he’s written to a straight up Hollywood action movie. An innocent woman is mentally abused into taking her own life by an adversary that is psychopathic and above the law. The main antagonist verges on the danger level of a Bond villain or comic book supervillain.  If they gave an over the top story like this to directors with the careful hands of someone like The Coen Bros. then they would have another dramatic action classic.

If any Lehane character has been under served in the movies, it’s Angie Gennaro and this story would be a great choice to give this woman her due. She is a beautiful street tough Boston native and a crack shot that rivals her partner. There are still not enough female action heroes in our movies and Lehane writes female characters that women can look up to. If you liked movies like Collateral or No Country For Old Men, then you would be into this movie.

Casting choices:
Someone like Mads Mikkelson from Hannibal could pull off this character and would be very enthralling to watch. Bubba is another character from Gone Baby Gone that did not get enough screen time and he is a big part of this story. I know he's pretty different from the physical descriptions Bubba in the books but I'd put Norman Reedus in that role.
