5 Other Dennis Lehane Novels That Should Be Movies

4. Darkness, Take My Hand

Dennis Lehane Shutter Island
HarperCollins

The second novel for Kenzie and Gennaro puts the detectives on the trail of a possible group of serial killers that become known as The Boston Manglers, with a body count that is comparable to the Zodiac Killer. It is a story full of action and suspense but it is the kind of cleverly staged action that requires no CGI or expensive set pieces. The film version of this could be made for a fourth of the budget of modern blockbusters. An adaptation of this would even work as a standalone story if the movie makers just wanted to jump straight to it.

If you liked the surprises and story turns of Gone Baby Gone then the twists and shocking revelations of Darkness, Take My Hand will thrill you. Movies about serial killers have always been polarizing for the public and there have not been enough solid entries in that genre in recent years. Fans of movies like Silence of the Lambs, Seven, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would be the perfect audience to see this detective duo chase down The Boston Manglers.

Casting choices:
This is a bit tricky since the identity of the lead villain is a big reveal but I'd cast someone like Viggo Mortensen or Brendan Gleeson as the leader of the Boston Manglers.
