5 Reasons Indiana Jones 5 Should NOT Be Made (And 5 Reasons It Should)
1. James Mangold Is Directing (Should)
Now here's a guy who knows how to make films; Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted, Walk The Line, Ford V Ferrari and of course, everyone's favourite weepy superhero western mash-up, Logan. He's also a fine writer too, having penned four of the films just mentioned. In short, if Mangold wants a stab at Indy 5, fans could do a lot worse.
Mangold still has that sense of urgency and danger associated with the character and if Ford can still handle it, we need to see Indy in some real danger again, not just the Lucas/Spielberg sentimentality that has weighed their work down in later years. As the original crew grew older, so did their priorities - grandkids, legacy, etc, all are evident in their work and it shows in Spielberg's increasing schmaltziness.
Mangold, however, is still hungry and it shows in his films. Movie makers should take risks, more often than not it pays off in the best ways. Take the decision to make Logan an 'R' rated film, probably against the wishes of the studio but one decision that recognised the need for commitment to the character.
Mangold needs to do the same here - Indiana Jones doesn't grow old gracefully - you're talking about the guy who brought a gun to a sword fight because he had an upset stomach, the same guy who shot three Nazis with one bullet. Keep it dangerous, keep it risky by taking a risk.
