3. The Songs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG6TZieXgA8 The songs are the biggest factor in any musical. A good selection of songs can almost save an awful musical or make a decent one a lot better. And with Avenue Q, they make an already great show exemplary. Theres not much else to say other than theyre catchy, well put together, and most importantly of all, theyre absolutely hilarious. Theyre also pretty innovative, tackling subjects you wont see discussed in many musicals. If you can find me one other musical (apart from The Book Of Mormon) with songs like Everyones A Little Bit Racist, It Sucks To Be Me, and You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want When Youre Making Love, Ill buy you a pint. Theres also the perfect number of songs. One of the things I really disliked about the musical Hair is the massive imbalance of songs and story but Avenue Q finds a really good balance, particularly since none of the songs feel superfluous. With the possible exception of Schadenfreude in the second act, theyre all used to either establish character or further the story. And with this being the musical that brought us the now infamous song The Internet Is For Porn, you know youre in for a real treat if you go and see it.
