5. Gotham City
Among the most common complaints about Batman and Robin is the claim that the film was toyetic: coming across as more of a very long advert for future merchandise than a compelling comic book adaptation. However, this did provide one notable advantage: the exploration of Gotham City. In previous installments, the audience had only really been privy to certain areas of Gotham City which, truthfully, could have been mistaken for anywhere on Earth. For the first time however, Batman and Robin took us deeper into the bizarre underbelly of the city, complete with outlandish gangs, street races and luminous weaponry. Ironically, in what turned out to be the worst installment of the Burton and Schumacher series, this Gotham seemed a plausible breeding ground for the kind of eccentric super villain that fans had come to expect.
