5 Reasons Why Captain America Won't Die In Civil War
4. It Makes No Sense For Disney To Kill Off Their #1 Hero
It's easy to forget in the hype for Civil War that only five years ago the prospect of a Captain America movie was a shaky one. In the mainstream consciousness he was some relic of wartime propaganda (yes, if anything he's actually an antithesis to it, but tell that to 2011 movie fans) and far too much of a boy scout to make for an interesting protagonist. We liked our Marvel heroes irreverent, quippy and alcoholics. This guy can't even get drunk. Two of the best stand-alone movies in the series and excellent parts in both Avengers later and now everyone loves him as much as Iron Man (if not more). Captain America is at the forefront of Marvel marketing worldwide, his name now thematically removed from his homeland namesake and merchandise sales are through the roof. So, on a pure-and-cynical commercial level, why would Disney undo all that hard work and kill him off? However, because I still want to believe movies aren't all about the money, there's also the more story-centric reasons. In today's landscape of mega-franchises, actors are expected to play comic icons an obscene number of times, allowing them to fully explore the character - when Hugh Jackman hangs up Wolverine's claws he'll have been in over ten X-Men movies (if you believe he'll pop-up in Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit) and Robert Downey, Jr. will likely top that record by the time he's done with Iron Man. Excluding for-a-laugh cameos, Chris Evans has only played Captain America in four movies - hardly a great innings for one of the biggest characters in the biggest franchise ever.
