5 Reasons Why Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom Is Underrated

2. The Mission

Indiana Jones Temple Of Doom
Paramount Pictures

Both Raiders and Last Crusade deal with broad themes; good vs evil, right vs wrong and preventing the forces of evil from taking over the world. Temple of Doom does something a little bit different; Indy's mission, on paper, is to infiltrate Pankot Palace to retrieve the stolen sankarra stone and return it to the village.

However the emotional, driving force of the film is Indy rescuing the stolen children. It seems small compared to saving the world from Nazis, but this is exactly what makes it so meaningful. It's personal, it's relatable and it allows us the see another side to Indy.

Critics may say this film is too dark, and sure it has its moments, but watching the rescued children being reunited with their families is one of the most jubilant and uplifting moments across all three (okay, four) films.
