5 Reasons Why You Should Ignore The Critics On Rock Of Ages
5. Here We Go Again
Perhaps worst of all, though, is that the general consensus among critics and the film fans that they seem to have influenced is that Rock Of Ages is essentially same old, same old. You may notice that I havent spent much time going into detail about the films narrative or why I think its such a great watch- essentially, thats because I dont believe people are going to be sold based on the admittedly (somewhat) shallow plot and stereotypical characterisations. However, what I dont think critics have put across enough, and what has made the film a four-star hit for me is that there is such a blast to be had from watching major Hollywood and British stars rock out to some of the best music instalments of the past few decade in truly hilarious fashion. By no means is this the same old kind of musical youre used to- theres satire on contemporary musical genre evolution, a compelling love story threading through the whole setlist and above all a show-stealing turn from Tom Cruise in a career move that could well send him back to the top of the A-List as a daring and innovative actor. For these reasons and so many more, Rock Of Ages is truly a glorious throwback to the days when film-goers just wanted to be shown a good time, just as The Artist was to silent cinema and Hugo to magical fantasies. Yet until we stop taking the words of critics as the law of whether a film is good or not, great entries such as this are going to be overlooked and well be stuck with a never-ending cycle of prequels, sequels and reboots forevermore.
