42. Every Era Has The Same Amount Of Good And Bad
Another common generational difference made about cinema is how the current state of films isnt just inferior, but actively terrible. People will often cite such horrendous cash-ins like Transformers and Battleship or the numerous remakes of old favourites as proof positive of this, yet it is always to be expected to have some lacklustre releases. You can argue there are more bad films around now, but that is more down to a larger industry, with increasing mediums of release and bigger cinemas, that its to be expected; the proportion of good to bad is pretty much the same. Every era has had terrible films that made people long for the days of yore, but by their very nature they are forgettable and are replaced in memory by newer, equally deplorable tat. And lets not forget that every generation has an abundance of great films. In defence of modern cinema, just take a look at some of the brilliant features weve got this year, both in the form of blockbusters (The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall) and in more thought-provoking fare (The Master, Shame). Its easy in a subjective argument to ignore these, or talk in general terms, but the fact remains cinema at any time is neither really better or worse than it has been before.
