2. The Fountain
Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky which originally was meant to star Brad Pitt but due to budget problems Hugh Jackman got the lead role. The Fountain is pretty much as romantic and depressing as Romeo and Juliet and Titanic. The film focuses on three very similar stories, each of them spanning over a thousand years apart. The first is set as a conquistador who embarks on a journey to save his nation and queen. The second is set in the future in deep space with a traveller flying toward a golden nebula of Xibalba with a dying large tree. The last is a present day scientist who tries to find a cure for his cancer stricken wife. Three very depressingly similar love stores but set in different times. The Fountain is certainly one of the most passionate love stores of death and piety. It shows the fragility of our existence in this world. Moment of Tears: What makes The Fountain so bloody heart breaking to watch is that every time something happens in one of the stories it will continue over so when someone dies, we will witness their death three times! The scene when modern day scientist Tommy's wife dies from cancer and we see him sitting on his bed realising that he failed. He has an emotional break down and begins to tattoo a ring on his finger while weeping.
