2. It Provides A Point To Marvel's Phase 4
Ever since it first brought Earth's Mightiest Heroes together in The Avengers, the MCU has been building up to Infinity War. Through all of the standalone adventures and Ultron's age, Thanos has been slowly working pieces in place to acquire the Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones so he can rule the universe. The problem with this is that once Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2 is over, there's nowhere really to go. Phase 3 could easily drop clues for the next set of movies, but that doesn't get rid of the fact that anything after stopping the Mad Titan from killing half of life everywhere is going to feel a little underwhelming. Everything, that is, except for a cross-franchise showdown. Avengers Vs. X-Men would be an ideal Avengers 4 that doesn't simply pale in comparison to what's come before (and wouldn't feel too hokey thanks to the long-standing comic precedent). Of course, this crossover could include Marvel using other elements in Fox ownership - the shape-shifting Skrulls for Secret Invasion, a threat from planet-gobbler Galactus or an appearance of the Silver Surfer (all characters Marvel has expressed an interest in using in the past) - but if they include them, there's nothing (legally) stopping a couple of mutants coming over too.
