1. Blackest Night (Geoff Johns' Blackest Night crossover event)
While this is essentially a Green Lantern-oriented concept, its greater themes of the risen-dead and fleetingly recapturing lost love are popular themes currently as well as being extremely adaptable to events post-Man Of Steel. In the comics, the Black Lantern rings are inherited by dead corpses which reanimate them and allow them fantastic power on top of their undead thirst for consuming the entire emotional spectrum of living flesh. In the source material, Green Lantern villain The Black Hand has historically been responsible for the Black Lantern Corp., but there is no reason that idea could not be repurposed or retooled for a Man Of Steel follow-up, also linking a greater DC movie universe with Kal-El and the Lantern Corp. The massive damage and loss of humanity to Superman and to Clark personally in Man Of Steel will no doubt haunt Superman in terms of coping with the responsibility and guilt over the human toll his battle with Zod and the Kryptonians cost Earth, in addition to dealing with the emotional sacrifice made by his adopted father in Man Of Steel, could both serve as great linchpins for the dead to rise to seek twisted revenge against a tormented Superman. Man Of Steel did have the startling image of Superman sinking into a pile of skulls in an all-black suit.
The images of an emotionally torn Clark having to fight a walking dead Jonathan Kent bloodthirsty for Kryptonian blood and hunting down his adopted son in the Kansas cornfields, or a soaring Superman being torn from the sky by hoards of revived decaying zombies ripped from World War Z, would both modernize the plot for current audiences as well as cherry-pick an extremely popular modern comic storyline for this promising Man Of Steel sequel, and at the same time unifying and building a cinematic universe prime for Green Lantern sequels, a potential Green Lantern/Superman team-up, and of course laying the groundwork for the expected Justice League epic.
