5 Things You Learn As A Film Projectionist

5. The Digital Age Has Arrived

Recently I used a digital projector for the first time, and it was a rather tranquil experience. It was free of the neurotic panic induced by the 35mm €“ there was no worrying about a scope change or making sure the film was in focus. Operating a digital projector is easy; it is no more complicated than creating a playlist on iTunes and hitting €˜play€™. I expected this to be a relief, but instead there was an unmistakeable sense of sadness. I too, like poor old Vicky, felt obsolete, a spare part hanging listlessly around the projection room. With enough training, a chimp could operate one. There is a theory stating that if you give a monkey a typewriter and an infinite amount of time, he will almost surely type out the entire works of Shakespeare. I believe if you give a monkey a digital projector and a few hours, he will be able to show you Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on the big screen. Despite my bitterness, the picture quality and the sound clarity was undeniably better. The digital age has arrived and the 35mm steam train will be nothing more than a relic in a museum.

A student currently doing an English Language & Literature degree. I'm kind of a big deal. My apartment smells of rich mahogany and I have many leather-bound books. Anchorman is my favourite film.
