5 Totally Over-Rated Directors Working In Film Today

1. Sir Ridley Scott

There has never been a director more deserving of the number one spot on this list of the most over-rated directors alive today. I have been told forever how great this director is, but if I am completely honest I have yet to really see what all the fuss is about. Blade Runner is considered the greatest science-fiction film of all time, and my favorite movie genre is science-fiction so I should love this film right? Well, I don't... not even at all- but I really wish I could only so I wouldn't have to embarrass myself and admit to sacrilegious things like this on movie posts. I have watched this film about three times and everytime I have really wanted to see the genius in it. Perhaps if I was older or was in my teenage years when this film was initially released I would appreciate this early science fiction film a lot more than I do... although one of my favorite science-fiction films is 2001 A Space Odyssey and this film is far older than Blade Runner. Personally I find the film too dark and somewhat difficult to follow. I even tried to read the book in which this film is based "Why Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" so I could enjoy the film on more levels but I almost fell asleep (and if I had I would have been so uninspired I probably wouldn't have dreamt myself). Maybe I am cursed never to find this film or the story enjoyable on any level. Give me Star Wars or The Matrix over this sleep fest any day of the week. Another embarrassing confession now... I really didn't enjoy the film Alien, through I find the sequel, James Cameron's Aliens to be a great movie. I guess I will have to blame age for this also. As a man in my twenties, I simply can not get scared by films made before 1990 (with the exception of the ending of Don't Look Now). I watched the Exorcist for the first time last year and wasn't scared once- I actually found it somewhat hilarious. Still, I can understand that at the time Alien was made the film was probably considered genius, and as a fan of sci-fi movies I am thankful for the influence this film has had over many others that I actually enjoy in the genre. One of Ridley's most recent films, Robin Hood is potentially my least favorite movie of all time- certainly the worst film I have ever sat through and watched in the cinema. Who ever thought the idea of casting a really old Robin Hood and then sucking all the life and fun out of the Robin Hood stories would make a good movie. Thankfully, unlike my dislike of his previous movies, my opinion about Robin Hood seems to be in line with the critics. This movie only holds a score of 43% on RottenTomatoes. I find the Kevin Costner/ Morgan Freeman movie far more enjoyable than this one. This may come as some what of a shock but the two movies by Ridley Scott I have enjoyed the most so far are surprisingly the much loathed Silence of The Lambs sequel "Hannibal" and the 80's classic "Thelma and Louise". Nothing against Gladiator- it's just not exactly my sort of film is all. I am sure you all have many many differences in opinion as I do and I challenge you all to try and change my mind. I am looking forward to a lively debate in the comments section below... Tell me why I am wrong please...

I am a recent Screenwriting for Film and Television graduate from the UK. I am an unashamed geek who loves everything Marvel, and anything Joss Whedon has ever touched (except for maybe Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E). My current favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Family Guy, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, Homeland and Glee. I look forward to debating things with all of you in the future.
