5. Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom
A political biopic appears to be a yearly thing, but Mandela: A Young Walk to Freedom has the potential to stand out from the crowd. Idris Elba is playing the titular great man, which is a perfect choice even if it would have been nice to see a South African in the role, but Elba is a force of nature and one of the best actors currently working. Naomie Harris, another talented British actor is playing his ex-wife Winnie, which is also another deft bit of casting and shows that the producers are intent on getting the right people rather than the big name. After the rather stately and uncontroversial Invictus, here's hoping that A Long Walk to Freedom is a more edgy film that captures just why the great revolutionary was so important to South Africa, black people and indeed the world. At the very least, this should be the film that highlights Idris Elba's extraordinary talent to the world and if it gets people interested in South African history, then it has done its job.
