5 Reasons Ghost In The Shell Won't Live Up To Fan Expectations
2. Scarlett Johansson
So Scarlett Johansson was awesome in Lucy, and yes, she has been moving swiftly and easily into the world of Sci-Fi.
However, not a single fan would have bet on Johansson to play the Major. When the news was announced of her casting, you could practically hear the disengaged sighs from around the world.
Yes, Johansson isn't Japanese, which has upset a lot of people, and she's also probably a bit too stereo-typically pretty to play the Major who is usually portrayed as rather androgynous. But the main problem most fans seem to have with her is that she just isn't the Major.
Motoko Kusanagi could command an army of men and a team of specialised cyborgs without any question of her ability to do so. She drinks scotch and removes clothing for practicality purposes, with literally no sexual connotations attached. In the same vein, she can switch her sexuality on and off in a second and can manipulate even her smartest opponents with a wealth of skills she has obtained over years of working her way up through the ranks of the special forces. They don't call her the Major for nothing.
Johansson's casting lends too much to the possibility that the Major will be portrayed more as a sex symbol, and that her accomplishments will be more impressive because she is a woman, rather than that fact being totally and completely irrelevant.
