5 Ways Suicide Squad Has Changed Since It Was Announced
4. The Perceived Main Characters Shifted
What may stand out about that initial casting is the make-up of the characters. You have Harley Quinn and Deadshot who are basically the team's headliners, as well as the Joker, the movie's key selling point, but then it's a bit of a random selection. And a big chunk of the cast is missing too; El Diablo and Amanda Waller were added in February 2015, while Killer Croc and Katana weren't confirmed until March.
You'd have assumed these later-cast roles would be smaller, but that doesn't seem to be the case. As things have developed the full ensemble nature of the film has become clear and previous "background" cast members (Jay Hernandez and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in particular) appear much more essential.
This isn't to say the plans for the film changed at all (that'd be silly), but it's a big part of how the film was presented and marketed, and will no doubt effect who the "standout" character of the film is. Context is important, kids.
And speaking of marketing, that's a whole change unto itself.
