5 Ways To Make A Stand-Alone Venom Movie Work

3. Focus On Flash Thompson

There is certainly an interesting relationship between Eddie Brock and the symbiote as they are both hellbent on destroying Spider-Man but disagree with each others methods. The symbiote is an infection that runs on brutality and wants to kill people and cause havoc, while Brock is less inclined to do so. However, I think Flash Thompson is a much more compelling proposition as Venom. Flash Thompson already exists in the Amazing Spider-Man universe. He is the jock in the movie who picks on the younger boy and beats up Peter Parker. However, he goes through quite an extensive reinvention later in life. He becomes one of Peter's best friends, runs a Spider-Man fan club and goes on to join the army. Here is the interesting part. During a war Flash becomes a double amputee when both of his legs are blown off, which prompts the military to step in. They tell Flash that they have the symbiote in custody and offer him a job as a military controlled Venom. This of course gives him his legs back and he is put to work as a super powered secret agent. The crux of this story line is that he can never be attached with the Symbiote for more than 48 hours or else he will start to lose control of the suit. It adds a great ticking time bomb for every action set piece, and there is the impending feeling that this is going to blow up in everyones face at some point. The current run has dealt with issues such as solidarity, alcoholism, the death of a parent, break ups, amputation and addiction while also being chocked full of Venom action. It is a great mix and could make a really good movie to boot.
