5 Western Movie Remakes That Are Better Than The Original

5. Ned Kelly (2003)

Ned Kelly 1970's Ned Kelly, starring Mick Jagger (yes, that Mick Jagger; which other one could it be?) in the title role, was based on the true story of a once-innocent, fairly normal Australian man in the outback who descends into a life of crime. Like many Australian outback cowboy criminals, he starts off stealing horses - before long, though, he is drawn into murder. In doing so, he became one of the most wanted men in the world. Think Walter White, but with more horses and less blue crystal meth (but about the same amount of murder). The only thing was, it was pretty poor; Mick Jagger was never going to be a good option to play such a well-known historical figure, let alone an Australian one. The dialogue and pacing of the action didn't really help either, and the movie suffered as a result. Screen Shot 2013 11 05 At 20 15 50 The 2003 edition sought to remedy some of those issues; actual Aussies Heath Ledger and Naomi Watts were cast in the lead roles for a start. This went some way - along with better dialogue, music and cinematography - to improving on the original. That is not to say it was a great movie, mind - though it was good, and certainly improved on the 1970 version. Bonus points to those of you who know that the Heath Ledger movie is not strictly a remake. The Ned Kelly of 1970 was based on an original screenplay written by Ian Jones and Tony Richardson, while the material for the 2003 film was taken from a novel. Still, it warrants a place on this list because both movies focus on the same character's story. Also, the movie posters are rather alike, wouldn't you say?
