Even as Ridley Scott continues to prove himself to be a director of infuriatingly inconsistent quality, his projects still attract some of the best casts around. This adaptation of Andy Weir's 2012 sci-fi novel follows an American astronaut (Matt Damon) stranded on Mars, and includes among its supporting cast Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sebastian Stan. With a screenplay from Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods), hopefully this will be one of Ridley's stronger recent efforts, especially considering the critical evisceration of his just-released Exodus: Gods and Kings.
