Guillermo del Toro's long-anticipated return to the horror genre is a classically-themed 19th century English ghost story-cum-gothic romance, in which Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) finds out that there's more to her disarming husband Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston) than meets the eye. Details of exactly what this entails have been mostly kept under wraps, though del Toro has described his movie as "kinky", so it's unlikely to simply follow along a generic haunting premise: after all, why else would this at all attract the guy who made Pan's freaking Labyrinth? The cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and del Toro favourite Doug Jones, so there's lots of boxes being ticked here. If anyone can scare the living bajesus out of everyone in an age of gimmicky found footage movies and relentless horror remakes, it's this director. Release Date: October 16th
