39. James Cameron's X-Men
During the 90s, Spider-Man wasnt the only superhero franchise that James Cameron was interested in. He also gave the X-Men a brief whirl with a studio pitch written by his then-wife (and future Academy Award-winner) Kathryn Bigelow. There were many drafts of this would-be screenplay over the years, one involved the X-Men vs. The Brotherhood vs. Sentinels; another involved Magneto turning Manhattan into a mutant homeland (probably inspired by Christopher Goldens X-Men: Mutant Empire trilogy of novels); and another one had Magneto responsible for Wolverines adamantium. One of the most interesting aspects of the ultimately abandoned film is the fact that it would have starred none other than Bob Hoskins as Wolverine, which seems fairly odd in retrospect. Though, with Camerons track record it can almost be guaranteed that the film would have at least been a huge hit financially - if nothing else.
