Before Sam Raimi brought Spider-Man to the big-screen in 2002 a film adaptation for everyones favorite friendly neighborhood superhero was stuck in development hell for what felt like an eternity. Ever since the mid-80s several variations of the story would find itself almost being made. In the early 90s, Mr. Terminator himself James Cameron tried to make a gritty, more adult Spider-Man. Camerons script went heavy on the profanity and the story would have culminated with a battle atop the World Trade Center. But the movies most eyebrow-raising scene would have been a Spider-Man and Mary Jane love-making session that would have been rather graphic, on top of the Brooklyn Bridge. This is a far cry from Tobey Maguire blubbering non-stop and taking two movies to make a move on Mary Jane. Legal issues with the movie studios prevented all of this from happening. By the time the rights situation was ironed out, Cameron had moved on and Sony and Sam Raimi stepped in.
