Robert Rodriguez' follow-up to El Mariachi upped the budget from $7000 to $7m, and with more cash to play with the multi-hyphenate filmmaker crafted a violent, stylish and entertaining action movie that revels in providing style over substance.

Antonio Banderas is at his most charismatic as the mysterious Mariachi and generates a sizzling chemistry with co-star Salma Hayek, while writer/producer/editor/director Rodriguez shoots the increasingly over-the-top action sequences with a sense of fun and excitement that has been sorely missing from his recent work.
