Plot: In both versions, a TV crew become trapped in a quarantined apartment building infested with zombies.

Rec, the Spanish original, and its American remake, named Quarantine, are largely the same and are therefore combined here.

The found footage subgenre was a thorn in horror's side for many years and most such films were dreadful, but there were still some very good ones. In particular, Rec showed just how well the format could work when utilized successfully.

Rec cleverly uses the found-footage format to immerse viewers in a claustrophobic, gore-soaked nightmare and this, combined with the film's smart pacing and superbly-judged scares, make it an absolute panic attack of a viewing experience in the best possible way. It's a very short movie, but that's probably for the best - could viewers really have taken much more of that intensity?

As for Quarrantine, yes it was completely unnecessary but because it doesn't try to fix what was never broke and even adds in a little more character-work at the beginning, it's largely just as good as the original.

Both versions were followed by at least one sequel; Rec 2, a decent direct continuation of the original, is the only one particularly worth seeking out.
