50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

38. Mother!

Get Out Daniel Kaluuya
Paramount Pictures

Plot: An allegorical horror film, mother! follows a young woman (Jennifer Lawrence) has her tranquil existence with her husband (Javier Bardem) destroyed by the arrival of a mysterious couple (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer).

They don't make them like this any- actually, scratch that, they've never made 'em like this. Never. mother! truly is horror cinema at its most audacious and visionary.

Unfairly maligned by many on release, mother! is an imperfect yet utterly captivating allegorical horror film that explores its themes of nature, religion and humanity in the most bat**t crazy, depraved way imaginable.

Not all of it works, but when it comes together - and it does so far more often than not - then it's a visually stunning, hauntingly powerful and genuinely mesmerizing slice of insanity that you'll never, ever forget, especially as it contains THAT scene.
