50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

34. Doctor Sleep

Get Out Daniel Kaluuya
Warner Bros.

Plot: Decades after his ordeal at the Overlook Hotel, a grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) deals with the legacy of his father's death and tries to protect a teenager (Kyleigh Curran) with similar gifts to him from a sinister cult led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson).

Making a sequel to perhaps the most iconic horror film ever made was always going to be a tall order, but if there was anyone who could pull it off, it's Mike Flanagan. And he did it.

Doctor Sleep isn't particularly scary, but if one looks at it as more of a supernatural drama film then it's absolutely great. The film is brilliantly acted, visually stunning and wonderfully emotional, and it also works particularly well as a legacy sequel. It pays loving homage to the original while also evolving upon it and standing on its own.

Inevitably, Doctor Sleep isn't as good as The Shining but it comes impressively close, and unlike that other film this one has Stephen King's stamp of approval too.
