33. Saint Maud

Plot: A religious young nurse (Morfydd Clark) slowly goes mad as she becomes obsessed with saving the soul of her terminally ill patient.

In the sparse wilderness of 2020 theatrical releases, Saint Maud stood out as one of the undeniable highlights and it's easily one of the 2020s' best horror films so far.

Saint Maud is a reminder of how important a strong narrative often is in crafting a truly effective horror film, for this movie's greatest strength is its story. The film's story is an utterly fascinating and psychologically complex tragedy headlined by a brilliant lead character, and the skilled emotional highs this movie hits are the main reasons why the film is so powerful and disturbing, although Rose Glass' atmospheric directing deserves a ton of praise too.

The film also boasts one of the best recent horror performances from lead actress Morfydd Clark. It's just a shame she's currently being wasted in Amazon's terrible The Rings of Power.
